Students place in Hearst competitions

Three school students placed in the broadcast and writing competitions of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program, known as the Pulitzers of collegiate journalism.

Ashley Lopez, a senior from Miami, placed third in the radio multimedia competition. She receives a $1,000 award and moves on to the national semifinals, where she will submit additional entries for judging.

Bethany Tuggle, a senior from Durham, finished fifth in the TV news category, which comes with a $600 award. She also moved on to the semifinal round of judging.

Powell Latimer finished 10th in the sports writing competition, winning a $500 scholarship. Latimer, a senior from Charlotte, was chosen from 97 students from 56 universities.

UNC is in second place of the Hearst program’s Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition.
