NCSMA Journalism Teacher Fellowship Program

From Sunday, July 08, 2012
To Saturday, July 14, 2012

Advisers may receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for participating in the Institute and Certificates of Participation and Attendance in regional workshops.

A previous four-course endorsement plan, put into effect by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and offered in conjunction with NCSMA and the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication, allowed teachers to train themselves for journalistic tasks while earning hours of graduate credit for each course. N.C. DPI endorsements now require additional hours, but most can be met through NCSMA courses.

Courses that may be taken include "Journalism Education in the Secondary School," which trains advisers for their tasks with newspapers, yearbooks, magazines and desktop publishing; "Legal Issues in Scholastic Journalism"; "Journalistic Writing and Editing"; and "Desktop Publishing and Design in the Secondary School." Other courses sometimes offered in the summer are "Teaching Broadcast Journalism in the Secondary School" and "Teaching Online News in the Secondary School."

NCSMA offers fellowships to N.C. advisers to help them offset summer course expenses.
