John Clark joined the faculty of the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication in July 2011 as the Executive Director of the Reese News Lab.

A native North Carolinian, Clark teaches entrepreneurial journalism. He works with undergraduate and graduate students to develop and test new, sustainable product ideas for the media industry. Under Clark’s direction, students work in teams to conceptualize media product ideas, conduct user testing, construct preliminary prototypes and develop business strategies for their products.

Clark is the former general manager of where he built and led the multi-million dollar business behind on the one of the most successful local news websites in the nation. Under his leadership, received the Edward R. Murrow Award for best broadcast-affiliated website, the Editor & Publisher award for best local TV-affiliated website and a regional Emmy for continuing coverage, among other awards while diversifying and growing digital revenue.

At Capitol Broadcasting Company in 2005, he led the early development of the nation’s first local television news application on mobile phones and co-founded News Over Wireless, now StepLeader Inc.

Clark led the development of an experimental datacasting service to deliver news and information through digital television subchannels. He also started his own web development consultancy that he sold to another firm in 2005.

Clark has served on the North Carolina State University Student Media Advisory Board and was an adjunct lecturer of communication at Campbell University for eight years before returning to school for an M.B.A.
