Foy and Chilton win big

Incumbent mayors in both Chapel Hill and Carrboro won easy re-election, each winning over 70 percent of their towns’ votes.

Mayor Kevin Foy of Chapel Hill received 4,288 votes with 37 of 38 precincts reporting.  That was good for 70.13 percent and a clear victory. Foy was first elected mayor 2005.

Carrboro’s race was no closer with Mayor Mark Chilton receiving 1,709 votes for 74 percent of Carrboro’s voters. This will be Chilton's third consecutive term as Carrboro mayor.

“People want to move past division,” said Chilton, taking the high margin to be a sign of unity in Carrboro.  He spent the evening at Milltown with supporters and Alderman Dan Coleman, who also won re-election.

“We have a lot of work to do.  It’s been an inspiration that you support us even though you don’t always agree with us,” said Foy. He was thanking his supporters at a gathering at Crook’s Corner that included council members Sally Greene, Cam Hill, Bill Strom and Jim Ward.

Chapel Hill mayor candidate Kevin Wolff stopped by Top of the Hill to congratulate Matt Czajkowski on his lead in the vote count for the fourth Town Council seat. He said, "I'm very happy that more people came out to vote. I am thankful to the 9 to 10 percent more voters that came out to vote for me, and I hope that drives a point to the mayor that he does not have a mandate to do whatever he wants."

Provisional and transfer votes have yet to be counted, but with such high margins, results in these two races will not change.
