Assistant Professor David Cupp teaches Electronic Journalism, Writing for the Electronic Media, and Voice and Diction. For more than 25 years before turning to academic life, he was News Director of WVIR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Charlottesville, Va. Throughout that period, he also co-anchored NBC29’s 6p.m. weekday newscasts. Cupp spent several years representing Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia on the board of directors of the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA). He served as president of both the Virginia United Press International Advisory Board and the Virginia AP Broadcasters (VAPB) Board. He represented the Virginia Association of Broadcasters (VAB) on the Freedom of Information Committee of the Virginia Press Association, and he served as vice president of the Virginia Coalition for Open Government. In 1999, the VAB presented Cupp with the George A. Bowles Award for Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News. In 2003, the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters presented Cupp with the Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Service in the Public Interest. In 2004 the RTNDA awarded Cupp’s newsroom a national Edward R. Murrow award for writing.
