Jim Hefner brings more than 30 years of experience in the broadcasting industry to the classroom. He currently teaches electronic media management, and leads Carolina Week, the school’s twice-weekly, student-produced newscast. He also teaches broadcast news writing, television news reporting, and audio-video gathering and production at the school.
Hefner is the former president and general manager of WTAE-TV, the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, and vice president and general manager of WRAL-TV, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh. In addition, he held the position of news director at KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh; WRAL-TV, Raleigh; WFMY-TV, Greensboro, and WNCT-TV, Greenville, N.C.
He is the former president of the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, the Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas, and the Pittsburgh Communication Foundation. In addition, he is a former member of the affiliate board for the CBS Television Network, where he headed the group’s new media and technology efforts.
A graduate of the school, Hefner began his career in the newspaper industry, serving as a reporter or editor at the Wilmington Star-News, the Hickory Daily Record and The News and Observer of Raleigh. He holds a master's degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and is a graduate of the Hearst Management Institute, conducted by the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management and Medill School of Journalism.
