Assistant professor M.A. Instituto de Artes Visuales B.A. Universidad de Santiago de Compostela Assistant Professor Alberto Cairo joined the School in 2005. His main interests are information design, educational and scientific graphics and visual communication history. Before coming to UNC-CH he worked for La Voz de Galicia, Diario16 (newspapers in Spain) and DPI Comunicación. He was the director of Infographics and Multimedia at elmundo.es, which won more NetMedia, Malofiej, and Society for News Design design and infographics awards than any other publication in the world between 2000 and 2005. In the 2004 edition of the SND.ies, Cairo's department won the first gold medal ever given for breaking-news coverage. Cairo was a professor of Graphic Communication at Carlos III University in Madrid and has been an invited lecturer at the SND-Malofiej Infographics international conference (Pamplona, Spain), the SND-Houston (2005) and SND-Orlando (2006), the Symposium of Online Journalism (University of Austin, Texas), the Multimedia Bootcamp (UNC-Chapel Hill), the World Editors Forum 2005 (WAN/WEF Seoul, Korea), and other conferences in the U.S., Singapore, Switzerland, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Spain. He also has experience as a design/infographics consultant and freelancer and has worked for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, El Mundo (Spain) and El Universal (Mexico).
