Anne JohnstonAnne Johnston’s research interests include political communication, political advertising, women and politics and diversity issues in the media. She is the co-author of the 2001 book, Videostyle in Presidential Campaigns: Style and Content of Televised Political Advertising. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of more than 1,200 televised presidential ads from 1952 to 1996. She has authored articles that have appeared in Political Communication, Journal of Communication, Journalism Quarterly, Political Communication Review and Journal of Applied Communication Research and has chapters in books on U.S. and French political advertising, election communication, women and media, and methodology used in political advertising research.

During the 2004 U.S. presidential campaign, Johnston served as a member of a national consortium of scholars, researchers and students studying the communication and media used during the election. In 2001, Johnston received a competitive Pogue Leave from UNC. She has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Communication, Political Communication and Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly and is a member of the International Communication Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and the American Political Science Association.

Johnston was the School’s Ph.D. program coordinator from 2000-2005 and is a member of the School’s Graduate Admissions Committee, the Minorities Activities Committee, and the Promotion and Tenure Committee. She was selected as the Julian W. Scheer Term Professor in the School (2004-2006) for overall excellence.
