Associate professor

Bill Cloud has been with the School since 1982. He teaches beginning and advanced classes in copy editing.

Cloud has been named to the board of directors of the Educational Fund of the American Copy Editors Society. He is also director of the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Center for Editing Excellence, which trains college students and recent graduates for summer internships as copy editors on Knight Ridder newspapers. He is co-director of the Summer Institute for Midcareer Copy Editors, sponsored by the Knight Foundation, which brings 18 professionals to Chapel Hill for a week of training and discussion.

Cloud has been an editing coach at newspapers including the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C.,and The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. He has been a judge for numerous contests, including those of the Dow Jones News Wires and The National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. He was coordinator of the first convention of the American Copy Editors Society, held at the University in 1997.

In the School, he coordinates the Hearst Visiting Professionals program. He also is a General College academic adviser, working with pre-journalism majors. In 2002, he won the Kay Phillips Distinguished Service Award for his work as director of what was then the N.C. Scholastic Press Association.

Cloud came to the School from Newsday on Long Island, where he spent some time in charge of the newspaper's Part II (feature section) copy desk. Before joining Newsday, he worked as a reporter and copy editor for The Miami Herald, spending time on copy, sports and state desks.

Cloud is a native of Pleasant Hill, Mo., where his family ran the weekly newspaper.
