Dulcie Straughan is the senior associate dean of the school and has developed and teaches a range of public relations courses. Her research interests include public relations history, agenda setting and agenda building, and issues management. A member of the faculty since 1990, Straughan won a Tanner award for excellence in undergraduate teaching in 1995 and the School's David Brinkley teaching excellence award. She has a number of years of professional experience in public relations, primarily in government public information, as well as corporate and agency experience. Straughan has had her work published in Public Relations Review, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, the International Communication Bulletin, Media History Monographs and others. Her book on women reformers during the Progressive era and how they used public relations strategies to work for social justice issues will be published in 2007. Straughan has worked as a public information officer for a Virginia state agency and as a media relations manager for a major pharmaceutical company. She also worked part-time as an account executive at a small public relations agency and as a reporter for a Virginia weekly newspaper.
