Richard Simpson has taught at Trinity University and SMU in Texas. An independent producer-director in Atlanta for five years, he now combines teaching media production classes during the fall and spring semesters with various independent production assignments during the summer. In addition, he is the production designer and manager for Carolina Week, the School's award-winning student-run news program. 

 He has produced and directed corporate, public relations, entertainment, educational and informational films and videos for regional, national and international distribution.   Recent production credits include:  writer, producer, director, videographer, and editor for “A Tribute to Kay Kyser,” a television special. Producer, director, videographer, and editor for two video specials for the Program in the Humanities and Human Values; producer and production manager for a quarterly 60-minute live nationwide medical program, “Medical Grand Rounds,” 2003-2006; co-producer, director, creative editor and on-line editor for a series of health and fitness PSA’s for the Veterans Administration’s National Center for Health  Promotion and Disease Prevention.

 He has received several International Television Association's Reel of Excellence Awards. He has been a media judge and electronic media director and chairman for the Annual National Headliner Awards, and media judge for the Texas Film Commission, the N.C. Association of Broadcasters, International Television Association, and the City of Raleigh (N.C.) Arts Commission. Simpson is a member of the School's Hearst Contest Committee. He has been a media consultant and adviser for many nonprofit organizations as well. His interests are in corporate communication and video and film production.

In 2006, Simpson received the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence Award at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was the Walter Hussman term professor, 2005-2006, and the Shumaker term professor, 2002-2004.
