Queenie Byars joined the School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty in 2008. In addition to teaching courses in public relations writing she also serves as coordinator for diversity initiatives at the school. As a guest lecturer in 2007, she also taught courses in news writing. Her interests include international community relations and diversity in higher education.
Previously she co-founded Creative Communication Works, Inc., a public relations consulting firm in Northern Virginia. She also served as a public relations consultant managing the National Aerospace Awards program for the Air Force Association in Arlington, Va.
Byars served as a lieutenant colonel and public affairs officer for the U.S. Air Force. During her assignment at the American Forces Information Service in Alexandria, Va., she provided oversight of advanced education and training programs for Department of Defense personnel in the public affairs career field. While assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. she planned and coordinated public affairs guidance that included international security policy, intelligence and space policy. Byars also prepared senior officials for press conferences and media interviews with the Pentagon Press Corps and international journalists. She also had public affairs assignments in San Antonio, Texas; Miami, Fla., Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Tokyo. Byars was recognized for public affairs achievement and government service. She was awarded medals that include: the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Air Force’s Meritorious Service, Commendation and Achievement Medals.
