The Don and Barbara Curtis Excellence Fund for Extracurricular Student Activities Amount: Varies Special consideration: Extracurricular activities The Don and Barbara Curtis Excellence Fund for Extracurricular Student Activities supports undergraduate majors in the School who participate in meaningful out-of-class activities that will help them in their mass communication careers. The fund will provide about $25,000 a year to support students. The first application deadline is Oct. 1. Any student in the School may apply for funding independently or as a member of a student organization. If an application is selected to receive funding, the amount will correspond to the nature of the proposal. Examples of meaningful extracurricular activities include participating in internships; attending national and regional competitions or meetings; working for Carolina Week, the School's student-produced news program; or participating in the School's annual fall- and spring-break trips to major U.S. cities to meet and gain insights from professional communicators. Minority Presence Grant Program for Doctoral Study Amount: Varies Special consideration: Minorities The Minority Presence Grant Program for Doctoral Study, Law, and Veterinary Medicine provides stipends of up to $4,000 for the academic year, with an option of $500 in additional support for study in the summer session, for black residents of North Carolina who are selected to participate. Recipients must be full-time students pursuing doctoral degrees, law degrees, or degrees in veterinary medicine at East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Charles Kuralt Fellowship in International Broadcasting Amount: Varies Special consideration: Electronic Communication Deadline: Oct. 1 Application: See Senior Associate Dean Dulcie Straughan. This one-year, paid fellowship at Voice of America is awarded to a recent School graduate, bachelor's or master's, who excelled in electronic communication. Applicants will take a VOA newswriting examination and be interviewed by VOA executives. The winner will work as a reporter or producer at the VOA in Washington, D.C. The fellowship is sponsored by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees all U.S. government broadcasting except military programming. It was created by VOA to honor the memory of the UNC-Chapel Hill graduate who was one of America's most beloved journalists. Minnie S. and Eli A. Generously funded by the Park Foundation, these prestigious awards go to eight new doctoral students and 14 new master's students each year. Assuming satisfactory performance in the program, doctoral student funding extends over the three-year program, and master's student funding is for two years. In return for this funding, students work as graduate assistants. An application letter should be addressed to the director of graduate studies and include a substantive explanation of the applicant's interest in media ethics. This award was established in 1994 by Frank Clingman, a School alumnus who was personnel director of The Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel. Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship Amount: $6,000 per semester for four semesters of study Special consideration: News-editorial journalism; medical journalism; minority and disadvantaged students Awarded to an incoming master's student in the medical journalism program. Preference is given to minority and disadvantaged students. School of Journalism and Mass Communication Award in Documentary Photojournalism Amount: Up to $4,000 Special consideration: Visual communication; photojournalism Deadline: March 1 Application: Submit the following information, not handwritten, to assistant professor Laura Ruel: a letter of application describing the project, including its importance, methodology and objectives; budget for supplies, travel and other expenses; portfolio; and résumé. This award goes to a photojournalism student or students to conduct fieldwork for documentary still photography projects. Applicants must be majors or premajors (undergraduate and graduate students are eligible) or must have graduated as majors during the school year. They must have completed at least one photojournalism course in the School before applying. M.S. This award honors M.S. Van Hecke, a 1948 graduate of the School and former business reporter for The Charlotte Observer. Awarded to returning undergraduate or graduate students interested in a career in business reporting. Both students must enroll in "Business Reporting." One student will be awarded an internship on the business desk of The Charlotte Observer, and the other will be awarded a business internship at Bloomberg Business News. Kathryn M. This scholarship is for a graduate or undergraduate student with a stated intention to pursue a career in medical journalism. The minimum requirements are demonstrated financial need and 3.0 GPA for undergraduates. N.C. Psychoanalytic Foundation Journalism Scholarship Amount: $1,000 Special consideration: News-editorial journalism; medical journalism Awarded to a master's student in the medical journalism program. Applicants must submit a 200-word proposal for a project in any medium related to mental health. Jim D'Aleo Award Amount: $1,000 Given to a graduate student who has gone above and beyond our already high expectations to contribute something special to the school, the university, the community or the discipline. Created in memory of James D’Aleo, doctoral student in the school who died in 2002 of cancer. In addition to the monetary award, the winner receives a dozen Dunkin’ Donuts and a UNC-Chapel Hill cap. Maxwell Graduate Scholarship in Medical Journalism Amount: $1,000 Special consideration: News-editorial journalism; medical journalism To an incoming master's student in the Medical Journalism Program. The Maxwells earned degrees at UNC-Chapel Hill (Mrs. Maxwell with a master's from the School). With encouragement from Dean Cole and the faculty, she created her own sequence with courses from the School of Public Health. Peter Lars Jacobson Award Amount: $500 Special consideration: News-editorial journalism; medical journalism Deadline: March 1 Application: Submit story or stories with name, address, telephone number and class year to Professor Tom Linden. Established in 1995, this award honors Dr. Peter Jacobson, a neurologist who was instrumental in creating the medical journalism program in the School. It is awarded annually to the journalism-mass communication student who writes the best medical story. Joseph L. Morrison Award for Excellence in Mass Communication History Amount: $500 Special consideration: History This award goes to the student, undergraduate or graduate, who distinguishes himself or herself in the study of history. It honors the memory of the faculty member who taught journalism history from 1946 to 1970. Outstanding Graduating M.A. Student Amount: $500 This annual award, first given in 1995, goes to a student receiving the master's degree in May. Outstanding Graduating Ph.D. Student Amount: $500 This annual award, first given in 1995, goes to a student receiving the doctoral degree in May. Carol Reuss Award — M.A. Student Amount: $500 Special consideration: Public relations This award goes to an outstanding master's student who is studying public relations. It honors the former faculty member who taught public relations from 1976 to 1996. (A separate award is given to an outstanding junior.) John B. Adams Award for Excellence in Mass Communication Law Amount: $250 Special consideration: Law This $250 award goes to the student, undergraduate or graduate, who distinguishes himself or herself in the study of law. It honors the 1969-79 dean of the school.
