Speed Hallman received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the School in 1982 and a master's in media production from Appalachian State University in 1991. 

After graduating from UNC he worked in the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Bill Hefner (D-NC) and directed the news bureau at Appalachian. 

Hallman returned to UNC in 1994 as director of communications in the Arts and Sciences Foundation. He joined the central development office as director of development communications in 1998. In February 2004 he returned to the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to lead the school's development and alumni affairs efforts.
