Professional EducationThe school's Professional Education Program is dedicated to providing journalists and communication professionals with the most up-to-date knowledge needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive market. Practical workshops and thought-provoking seminars offer advanced training in all areas taught in the school, including:

  • Print, broadcast and online journalism
  • Visual communications, including photography, multimedia and Web design
  • Advertising, public relations and marketing

Programs feature J-school faculty as well as experts from leading media organizations, communications firms and research groups. Programs range from weeklong workshops to one-day seminars, usually offered on Fridays, in the state-of-the-art Freedom Forum Conference Center in Carroll Hall.

2012 Multimedia Bootcamp, May 2012

This workshop is designed for professionals who want to explore the various forms of multimedia storytelling. Custom training

The Professional Education program also can customize training sessions using School faculty in areas such as broadcast news, crisis communications, new media and marketing. The school offers popular workshops in media relations and interviewing skills, which include tips on keeping on-message during interviews as well as practical interviewing training in the school’s news studio.  Recent workshops include:

Media training for administrators in the UNC Library system, July 2011
Faculty members Charlie Tuggle and Jim Hefner led senior administrators of the UNC Libraries through a media-training workshop that included tips on framing messages during interviews as well as hands-on training in the school’s news studio.

Workshop on politics and the media for the Korea Broadcast Journalist Association, August and October 2011
Two week-long workshops for Korean journalists to learn more about the interaction between politics and the media in American society.  Featuring lectures from JOMC and UNC faculty, visits to local media outlets and roundtable discussions with local politicians and lobbyists.

Workshop on new media in journalism for the Korea News Editors Association, November 2011
Two day workshop on techniques on integrating new and social media into products.  Discussion with JOMC faculty about how to write and edit for social media, how to integrate multimedia and interactivity into websites, and how to effectively use blogs and Twitter.
