Research & Graduate Studies
Research is a critical component in the life of any academic community. Doctoral students in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication learn the skills to begin a research career, and through their coursework and collaboration with faculty, they develop an area of expertise that will guide their future research and teaching activities.

The school's graduate program, one of the nation's most distinguished programs in journalism and mass communications, offers master's and doctoral degrees.

Total enrollment in the two-year master's program is usually about 50 students, with 25 to 30 new students enrolled each year. Another 50 students are enrolled in the doctoral program, which normally requires three to four years to complete. Ten to 12 new doctoral students are admitted each year.

The school also offers a graduate-level Certificate in Technology and Communication, which is taught completely online and requires no travel to campus. Students earn the certificate by taking any four of the five courses in the program. The program is aimed at working professionals and usually takes one to two years to complete.
