The Don and Barbara Curtis Excellence Fund for Extracurricular Student Activities supports undergraduate majors in the school who participate in meaningful out-of-class activities that will help them in their mass communication careers. Click here for a printable application. The fund provides approximately $25,000 a year to support students. Any student in the school may apply for funding independently or as a member of a student organization. If an application is selected to receive funding, the amount will correspond to the nature of the proposal. Examples of meaningful extracurricular activities include developing award-winning media projects; attending national and regional competitions or meetings; or participating in the school's annual fall- and spring-break trips to major U.S. cities to meet and gain insights from professional communicators.

Minority Presence Grant Program — General Program

The University will continue to fund the Minority Presence Grant Program — General Program, Part I and Part II. The University will allocate this money to historically white and historically black institutions to aid them in recruiting financially needy N.C. students who would be minority presence students at the respective institutions. These funds enable the institutions to offer relatively more aid for minority presence students in the form of grants rather than loans. General Program Part I includes funds for minority presence grants for students attending the North Carolina Central University School of Law. General Program Part II consists of grant funds for Native Americans, Hispanics and Asians.

Minority Presence Grant Program for Doctoral Study

The Minority Presence Grant Program for Doctoral Study, Law and Veterinary Medicine provides stipends of up to $4,000 for the academic year, with an option of $500 in additional support for study in the summer session, for black residents of North Carolina who are selected to participate. Recipients must be full-time students pursuing doctoral degrees, law degrees, or degrees in veterinary medicine at East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Charles Kuralt Fellowship in International Broadcasting

This one-year, paid fellowship at Voice of America is awarded to a recent school graduate, bachelor's or master's degree recipient, who excelled in electronic communication. Applicants will take a VOA newswriting examination and be interviewed by VOA executives. The winner will work as a reporter or producer at the VOA in Washington. The fellowship is sponsored by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which oversees all U.S. government broadcasting except military programming. VOA created the award to honor the memory of the UNC-Chapel Hill graduate who was one of America's most beloved journalists.

Minnie S. and Eli A. Rubinstein Research Awards

These awards are given to students engaged in thesis or dissertation research projects. They were created by Mr. Rubinstein, an adjunct faculty member in the school, to honor his late wife.

Roy H. Park Fellowships

  • Master's students: $13,000 plus tuition, health insurance, research/travel support

  • Doctoral students: $20,000 plus tuition, health insurance, research/travel support

Application: No special application necessary; all graduate program applicants who are U.S. citizens will be considered.

Generously funded by the Triad Foundation, these prestigious awards go to eight new doctoral students and 14 new master's students each year. Assuming satisfactory performance in the program, doctoral student funding extends over the three-year program, and master's student funding is for two years. In return for this funding, students work as graduate assistants.

William Francis Clingman Jr. Ethics Award

This award goes to a graduate student with an expressed interest in media ethics. An application letter should be addressed to the director of graduate studies and include a substantive explanation of the applicant's interest in media ethics. This award was established in 1994 by Frank Clingman, a School alumnus who was personnel director of The Winston-Salem Journal-Sentinel.

Pfizer Minority Medical Journalism Scholarship
Amount: $6,000 per semester for four semesters of study

Awarded to an incoming master's student in the medical journalism program. Preference is given to minority and disadvantaged students.

Rich Beckman Documentary Photojournalism Award
Amount: Up to $2,500
Special consideration: Visual communication; photojournalism

Application: Submit the following information, not handwritten, to assistant professor Laura Ruel: a letter of application describing the project, including its importance, methodology and objectives; budget for supplies, travel and other expenses; portfolio; and résumé.

This award goes to a photojournalism student or students to conduct fieldwork for documentary still photography projects. Applicants must be majors or pre-majors (undergraduate and graduate students are eligible) or must have graduated as majors during the school year. They must have completed at least one photojournalism course in the school before applying.

M.S. Van Hecke Award
Amount: Up to $3,250
Special consideration: News-editorial journalism; business reporting; includes internship

This award honors M.S. Van Hecke, a 1948 graduate of the school and former business reporter for The Charlotte Observer. The M.S. Van Hecke Award is given to returning undergraduate or graduate students interested in a career in business reporting. Both students must enroll “Business Reporting.” One student will be awarded an internship on the business desk of The Charlotte Observer, and the other at Bloomberg Business News.

Kathryn M. Cronin Scholarship

This scholarship is for a graduate or undergraduate student with a stated intention to pursue a career in medical journalism. The minimum requirements are demonstrated financial need and 3.0 GPA for undergraduates.

N.C. Psychoanalytic Foundation Medical Journalism Award

The N.C. Psychoanalytic Foundation Medical Journalism Award goes to a master’s student in the medical journalism program. Applicants must submit a proposal for a project in any medium related to mental health.

Tom Wicker Scholarship

Given to a graduate student who has gone above and beyond our already high expectations to contribute something special to the school, the University, the community or the discipline. Created in memory of James D’Aleo, doctoral student in the school who died in 2002 of cancer. In addition to the monetary award, the winner receives a dozen Dunkin’ Donuts and a UNC-Chapel Hill cap.

Peter Lars Jacobson Award

This award honors Dr. Peter Jacobson, a neurologist who was instrumental in creating the medical journalism program in the school. It is awarded annually to the journalism and mass communication student who writes the best medical story.

This award goes to a student, undergraduate or graduate, distinguished in the study of history. It honors the memory of the faculty member who taught journalism history from 1946 to 1970.
