Image Barbara P. Semonche became the Library Director for the School in January 1990 after 13 years as the Durham, N.C. Herald-Sun news research librarian. Semonche is a frequent class speaker and consultant in database search strategies for students, faculty and international media scholars in the U.S. and abroad.

Semonche is active in professional associations such as the Special Libraries Association (SLA) and the Association for Journalism and Mass Communication Educators (AEJMC). She has been honored with several awards for her service, including being designated as a Fellow of SLA. She is author of numerous published articles and book chapters on news research and is the editor of the 1993 Greenwood Press book titled NEWS MEDIA LIBRARIES: A Management Handbook. Library consultation activities have taken her to a half-dozen newspaper and journalism libraries in the United States. As a Freedom Forum Fellow and a Knight Journalism Fellow, she has presented programs to journalists, librarians and news researchers in Europe.

Since 1993, Semonche has been the list administrator of NewsLib, an international mailing list for 1,200 news librarians, journalism educators, library science students, reporters and media researchers from 30 countries.
