The Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media identifies and brings to Carolina's campus 20 talented high school students from diverse backgrounds across the U.S. for an intensive one-week workshop in journalism and mass communication for rising seniors interested in print journalism.
The program honors the legacy of professor Chuck Stone, who retired from the school in 2005, and allows students to experience UNC campus life and to become acquainted with the J-school. Six of the 20 students who attended the 2007 inaugural Chuck Stone Program returned during the fall 2008 semester as Tar Heels.
Napoleon Byars directs the program in cooperation with the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA).

The 2009 program will be held at the school July 19-25. Aspiring high school-aged journalists are encouraged to apply. Priority deadline for application maters is June 1, 2009.
This summer's program is designed for students who will be seniors in the 2009-10 school year and who are interested in a journalism career.
