The latest edition of the student-produced Carrboro Commons is now available online. The Carrboro Commons is a biweekly publication that is "relentlessly local" in its coverage of Carrboro, N.C. The Commons is online at carrborocommons.org, and its print companion is available in PDF format. The Commons began publishing in earnest in spring 2007. Students in Jock Lauterer’s community journalism class were the reporters and photographers, and students in Andy Bechtel’s advanced editing class were the copy editors and page designers. That arrangement continues this semester, with Ryan Thornburg’s class on writing and editing for online media contributing as well. During production days, each class operates like a newspaper newsroom. Each issue of the Commons is posted online, and a prominent link indicates how the print version can be downloaded. We believe this hybrid of print and online represents a possible “newspaper of the future.” Some professional news organizations, notably MinnPost, have since adopted the idea of an online newspaper complemented with a PDF print component.
