Folkerts honored for leadership

Jean FolkertsJean Folkerts, dean of the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, will accept the 2008 Elizabeth J. Somers Leadership Award on Friday, Sept. 26.

The award is given annually by The George Washington University Mount Vernon Campus and the Mount Vernon Alumnae Association to honor a member or former member of the Mount Vernon faculty who presented scholarly research in the classroom, mentored students to reach their potential, and exhibits strong leadership qualities on campus and in the community.

The award, which was first awarded in 1997, identifies those who have maintained the legacy of Elizabeth J. Somers, the founder of Mount Vernon College. Somers sought to provide demanding and challenging courses for students, while adapting curriculum to the individual.

Folkerts served in several roles at The George Washington University before coming to Chapel Hill in 2006. She was director of the School of Media and Public Affairs; professor of honors; associate vice president for special academic initiatives, and interim dean of Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

“We specifically seek faculty who have continued to be an inspiration to young women and extended that influence beyond the present to daughters of the new generations,” said Rachelle Heller, associate dean for academic affairs at the Mount Vernon Campus.

Folkerts was chosen for the honor for her commitment to the women of Mount Vernon College and her continued leadership in a university setting, Dr. Heller said.
