Who and What Counts in the Media's Coverage of Health Care

Journalist, author and nursing advocate Suzanne Gordon will speak at the school's colloquium series on Thursday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in Carroll Hall room 340.

Her talk is titled "Who and What Counts in the Media's Coverage of Health Care."

Gordon has been a freelance journalist and author since 1970, writing about political culture, women’s issues, nursing and health care. She has authored five books, co-edited four others, and co-authored, “From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public” - winner of an American Journal of Nursing Best Book of the Year Award in 2000.

Gordon observes nurses and other caregivers in health care institutions across the country and writes about care giving and health care reform issues. Her new book, “Nursing Against the Odds: How Heath Care Cutting, Media Stereotypes, and Medical Hubris Undermine Nurses and Patient Care” was published by the Cornell University Press in May 2005. She is currently writing a book called “The Perfect Number” about staffing ratios in California and Australia.

She holds the B.A. from Cornell University, did graduate work Johns Hopkins University, is a visiting professor at the University of Maryland, an editorial board member of The American Journal of Nursing, and a board member of the Center for Nursing Advocacy.
