Student-produced documentary wins Online Journalism Award
“South of Here” – a documentary multimedia project by UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication students – took top honors in the student journalism category in the Online Journalism Awards, tying with a Western Kentucky University student project.
Carolina partnered with a university in Santiago, Chile – Facultad de Comunicacion at the Universidad de los Andes – to produce “South of Here.” The documentary explores the history, people and communities of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and Chile, the surrounding waterways, and their critical relationship to the environment. The Online Journalism Awards are given by the Online News Association to honor excellence in digital journalism. A team of journalists, representing a diverse cross-section of the industry, judge the contest. Winners were announced Sept. 13 in Washington, D.C. Judges praised "South of Here" as “excellent journalism, stunning photography, creative navigation, elegant structure, refreshing and enlightening content, all superbly executed technically.”
