School wins collegiate Pulitzers

Hearst AwardsThe UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication placed third nationally in the overall intercollegiate competition of the 48th Hearst Journalism Awards, considered the Pulitzers of college journalism.
The school placed first overall in broadcast news and multimedia, and fifth overall in photojournalism.

“These awards are a tribute to the high quality of our students, their hard work and talent, and to the dedication of our faculty who teach and coach them,” said Jean Folkerts, dean of the school.

The Hearst Journalism Awards are earned through multiple rounds of judging in which students compete in a series of contests throughout the year. At the end of the year, points are totaled for overall winners in each category and for overall intercollegiate winners.

The school has placed in the top five of the overall intercollegiate category for the past three years.

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program, funded through the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, was founded in 1960 to provide support, encouragement and assistance to journalism education at the college level. The program rewards outstanding performance with scholarships for students and matching grants to schools.
Participation in the program is open to undergraduate journalism majors enrolled in 108 schools accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Students must be involved in campus media and must have published articles, photographs or produced newscasts or multimedia pieces.
