Joseph R. Schwartz and Robin Hilmantel are the school’s two winners in the In-Depth Reporting category of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
As the school winners, Schwartz and Hilmantel each receive $50. Their entries will be submitted to the national competition. The top prize in that competition is a $2,000 scholarship.
Schwartz, a senior from Chapel Hill, wrote a story about post-Katrina recovery in New Orleans. The story was part of a five-part series in The Daily Tar Heel. Hilmantel, a junior from Gaithersburg, Md., wrote about a sexual harassment lawsuit against soccer coach Anson Dorrance. Her story was published in Blue & White magazine.
The Hearst Awards, founded in 1960, honors the best work of undergraduate journalists. The annual competition includes six categories in writing.
The next category will be Sports. The deadline for entering that category is Thursday, Jan. 24.
