School winners advance to national Hearst Editorial/Columns of Opinion competition

Joseph R. Schwartz and Rachael Oehring are the school’s two winners in the Editorial/Columns of Opinion category of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

As the school winners, Schwartz and Oehring each receive $50. Their entries will be submitted to the national competition. The top prize in that competition is a $2,000 scholarship.

Schwartz, a senior from Chapel Hill, wrote an editorial about the criminal justice system and accountability. The editorial was published in the St. Petersburg Times, where Schwartz was an intern last summer. Oehring, a junior from Charlotte, wrote a humor column that was published in The Daily Tar Heel.

The Hearst Awards, founded in 1960, honors the best work of undergraduate journalists. The annual competition includes six categories in writing.

The next category will be In-Depth Reporting. For more information about the Hearst Awards, contact faculty member Andy Bechtel at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it
