It's your career!

You are encouraged to take an active role in developing your career. The Career Services Office will help you craft your first résumé, draft cover letters, and research internship and career opportunities.

That preparation has led to recent graduates landing jobs or internships at such places as National Geographic; ESPN; CNN; The Washington Post; The Philadelphia Inquirer; The St. Petersburg Times; Ketchum; Young & Rubicam; MSNBC; Apple; McKinney + Silver; the National Football League; Peppercom; Ken Sunshine Consultants; MTV; Wunderman; The Wall Street Journal; Voice of America; Orlando Magic; Teen People; Schwartz Public Relations; BBDO; ABC News; Fox News; Saatchi & Saatchi; Grey Worldwide and USA Today.

A full-time director staffs the Career Services Office in Carroll 41, and services are available to students, alumni and friends of the school.

Office hours

Students are encouraged to meet with the career services director to talk about résumés, internships and other pertinent career information. Please come by Carroll 41 and sign up for an appointment.

On-campus interviews

Media companies from across the country come to Carroll Hall to interview students for internships and full-time positions. Among those who frequently interview students in the school are The Washington Post, The News & Observer, The Charlotte Observer, The St. Petersburg Times, Young & Rubicam, University Directories and The Oregonian. If you would like to schedule an on-campus interview, please contact the director of career services.

JOMC Careers and JOMC Jobs listservs

Students, both undergraduate and graduate, are encouraged to subscribe to an e-mail listserv maintained by the Career Services Office. Information about meetings and activities within the school of Journalism and Mass Communication are posted to this list. There are two e-mail listservs --- jomccareers and jomcjobs. The first, jomccareers, is for undergraduate and graduate students in the school; internships and entry-level jobs are posted to this list, in addition to other pertinent career information. The second, jomcjobs, is set up for alumni and friends who want postings of jobs ranging from entry-level to those which ask for more experience.

University Career Services

JOMC students are encouraged to take advantage of the many services offered by University Career Services in Hanes Hall. Students who register with UCS can use three of its useful databases: Career Search, ELEADS and Carolina Connections.

JournalismJobs.com, in partnership with Columbia Journalism Review, provides listings of jobs in newspaper, magazine, TV, radio, online, wire services and more.

Center for Communication is a nonprofit media forum that offers students free seminars and workshops covering all facets of communication.

The state of North Carolina has job listings here.

Online alumni directory

Students and alumni are encouraged to utilize the online alumni directory. This directory is particularly helpful as a networking tool and allows users to search by class year, geographic region and other means to locate alumni. Most listings have business contact information, including email, which is usually the best way to try and contact alumni.

Newspaper resources

N.C. Press Association maintains a job bank of newspaper openings (both editorial and advertising) in North Carolina, as well as links to online newspapers in North Carolina.

The Detroit Free Press maintains a comprehensive newspaper jobs career page, the JobsPage, which includes openings with Knight-Ridder newspapers across the country. This site also contains links to other job banks and advice about landing reporting, editing, design and online jobs with newspapers.

American Society of Newspaper Editors maintains a newspaper careers site.

The Magazine Publishers Association maintains an excellent website that includes advice for breaking into magazine journalism. The site includes postings for both full-time positions and internships.

Public relations resources

The Council of PR Firms is a national organization of many of the leading public relations agencies in the world. A couple of very helpful areas: links to member agencies and information about careers in public relations.

PR Week magazine is perhaps the most complete trade publication covering the public relations industry. PR Week offers a comprehensive job site at PR Week Jobs.

A great starting point for information on public relations activities across the country is the Public Relations Society of America home page. There are links to a number of individual chapters, many of which have job listings and newsletters online, as well as links to individual agencies in particular cities.

Among the individual PRSA chapters with Web sites:

Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and RTP) PRSA chapter site. It also maintains a job bank.

Triad PRSA chapter is very active. It also maintains a job bank for the Greensboro Winston-Salem High Point area.

The Charlotte PRSA chapter meets monthly. It has a job bank with job and internship listings in the Charlotte area.

Information about public relations in the Washington area is at the PRSA National Capital chapter. The chapter maintains a Jobline and internship listings.

The International Association of Business Communicators is another professional organization for business communications professionals and has chapters throughout the world. Go here to find the latest job listings.

For people interested in public relations jobs in Washington, D.C., the newspaper Roll Call has a very good job listings site.

USA Jobs is the federal goverment's main job search engine and has listings for hundreds of openings across the world. Find public relations-oriented jobs by going to the Occupational Series option and clicking on "Public Affairs."

The NCAA has listings for jobs in media relations, marketing, event promotion and development in college and university athletic departments.

French/West/Vaughn is the Southeast’s largest independent public relations, public affairs, brand communications and advertising agency and is based in Raleigh.

Capital Strategies is one of the largest communications agencies in North Carolina and is based in Raleigh. The agency offers public relations, advertising, marketing, design and online services.

Epley Associates is a North Carolina-based public relations agency with offices in Charlotte and Raleigh.

Hill and Knowlton is one of the world's largest public relations agencies.

Landmark Communications publishes three major regional newspapers, including the News & Record in Greensboro and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk. Landmark also publishes the Carolina Blue athletic publication. To learn more about internships with Landmark newspapers, go here.

Gannett publishes newspapers across the country and is now the largest newspaper publisher in the nation. Among the papers published by Gannett are the Asheville Citizen-Times in Asheville, N.C., and USA Today.

The McClatchy Company owns The News & Observer in Raleigh, as well as newspapers in Hilton Head, Rock Hill and Beaufort, S.C.

The Associated Press
is the world's largest news cooperative and has writers spanning the globe.

Cox Newspapers
is one of the nation's largest chains and has a significant presence in North Carolina, publishing newspapers in Greenville, Rocky Mount and Elizabeth City.

Freedom Communications
publishes six dailies and three weeklies spread across North Carolina. The daily newspapers published by Freedom are the Times-News in Burlington; Sun Journal in New Bern; The Gaston Gazette in Gastonia; The Free Press in Kinston; The Daily News in Jacksonville and The Shelby Star in Shelby. The Hickory News in Hickory, The Havelock News in Havelock and the Jones Post in Trenton are weekly newspapers owned by Freedom.

The Tribune Company is one of the nation's biggest newspaper publishers. Among newspapers owned by Tribune are The Chicago Tribune, The Orlando Sentinel, The Los Angeles Times and Newsday. Tribune also is a major owner of broadcast stations and online properties.

Association for Women in Sports Media
lists sports reporting and editing positions.

Society of News Design mantains a job bank that includes graphic design and page design positions open across the country.

National Diversity Newspaper Job Bank maintains job postings from newspapers across the country and allows you to post résumés for editors to view.

Copy Editor can be used to search for copy editing jobs, including non newspaper jobs.

American Copy Editor Society (ACES) has a nifty job site.

The Associated Press Sports Editors site is made for aspiring sports reporters, editors, copy editors and designers.

Advertising resources

American Association of Advertising Agencies is one of the main professional organizations for the advertising industry. The AAAA offers a job search site for those looking for positions at advertising agencies.

The AAAA offers a large page of links to advertising agencies. The links to those advertising agencies is searchable by state.

Minority job banks

Many minority journalism associations maintain job banks, including the following:

Finding internships

Internships are an important part of your career preparation.

The Career Services Office serves as a clearinghouse for internship opportunities with advertising agencies, campus offices, newspapers, public relations firms, television and radio stations and new-media companies in the Triangle and across the country.

Now finding dozens of opportunities are literally at your fingertips. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication now uses the job and internship posting system used by University Career Services, NACElink.

This system allows you to search for internships by location and type of employer, among other things.

BUT YOU MUST REGISTER WITH UCS to access these postings. Using NACElink will soon take the place of internships listed on the jomccareers listserv.
