Hearst Visiting Professionals Program PDF Print E-mail
The School was one of only five programs in the nation originally selected by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in 1990 to receive an endowment of $200,000 to bring in several mass communication professionals each year to talk to classes and visit with students in small groups. Other schools were selected later.

The following people have visited the School as Hearst Visiting Professionals:

Fall 2000-spring 2001

  • Mark Holmes, editor of nationalgeographic.com, spoke in November to the Visual Communication Student Group.
  • Bonnie Anderson, vice president of recruiting and talent development at CNN, spoke in November to the broadcast news reporting reporting class and worked with students as they put together stories for "Carolina Week," the School’s weekly television show.
  • Stacy Wall, executive producer at Hungry Man Productions in New York, visited in October and spoke to three advertising classes taught by professor John Sweeney.
  • Lorraine Branham, assistant to the publisher of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, spoke in October to professor Deb Aikat's advanced reporting class, to professor Anne Johnston's "Women and Mass Communication" class and to a combined meeting of The Society of Professional Journalists and the Carolina Association of Black Journalists.
  • Michael Manning, product development manager for The Boston Globe'sboston.com, spoke in April to Professor Deb Aikat’s classes on electronic information sources.
  • Richard Griffiths of CNN spoke in April to Professor Charles Tuggle’s broadcasting classes in April.
  • Kellam Eanes, a producer at the Cartoon Network spoke in Professor Deb Aikat’s classes on electronic information sources.


Fall 1999- spring 2000

  • Deborah Potter, CNN correspondent, spoke in October to broadcasting classes in a trip arranged by Charles Tuggle.
  • Deidre Fitzpatrick, group creative director of Bozell advertising in California, appeared in John Sweeney’s three advertising classes in August.
  • Jeff Richardson, an executive with Burson Marsteller in Washington, D.C., spoke in November in Professor Dulcie Straughan’sclasses.
  • Bill O’Brian of The Washington Post spoke in April in Professor Val Lauder’s feature-writing class.
  • Margaret Alford of The Philadelphia Inquirer spoke in March to Professor Bill Cloud’s advanced editing class.
  • Brian Storm, lead multimedia editor and producer for MSNBC, spoke in March to Professor Rich Beckman’s class on multimedia production.
  • Tom Corrigan of The Depot, the Web site of The Greensboro News & Record, spoke to Bill Cloud’s advanced editing class.


Fall 1998-spring 1999

  • Beryl Adcock, a copy editor with the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau, worked with students April 20 in Professor Bill Cloud's "Advanced Editing" class on editing food stories and handling recipes.
  • Charles Apple, a graphic artist with The Chicago Tribune, spoke to Professor Jay Anthony's graphic arts classes Nov. 5. He also reviewed portfolios for design students and gave software tutorials.
  • Cynthia Darwin, president of Darwin Communications of Dallas, a broadcast talent appraiser, spoke to Professor Richard Elam's "Advanced Broadcast News Reporting" class April 20.
  • James A. Fyock, head of James A. Fyock & Associates in Winston-Salem, N.C., spoke to three classes Feb. 2-3: Professor Jan Yopp's "Public Relations Writing," Professor John Bittner's "Advanced Broadcast News Reporting" and Professor Phil Meyer's "Ethics and Professional Problems in the Mass Media." Fyock discussed his experiences handling difficult P.R. problems including an oil spill, product tampering and Vietnam refugees.
  • Paul Gumbinner, president of the Gumbinner/Gaubenstock executive placement firm, discussed job hunting with the Advertising Club on Nov. 19.
  • Alfred Hamilton, event marketing manager for First Union Bank in Charlotte, visited three classes April 22. He oversees many of the bank's sponsorships for NASCAR, Major League Baseball and the National Football League as well as a number of colleges.
  • Larry Keith, editorial projects director for Sports Illustrated, spoke to Professor Jay Anthony's "Sports Journalism" class Oct. 7.
  • Michael Manning, marketing content developer for The Boston Globe's boston.com, the largest regional Web site in the country, spoke to Professor Deb Aikat's Media Analysis seminar and to students in the "Electronic Information Sources" class March 30.
  • Lauren Purcell, senior editor for features with Mademoiselle magazine, talked about magazine writing and editing in Professor Bill Cloud's "Advanced Editing" class, Professor Chuck Stone's "Magazine Writing" class and instructor Val Lauder's "Feature Writing" class April 15-16.
  • Angela Robbins, news director for the ABC television news station in Augusta, Ga., spoke to Professor Richard Elam's "Advanced Broadcast News Reporting" class March 31.
  • Teresa Sasinska-Klas, director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication of Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, spoke April 15-16 to a "Reporting" class taught by Professor Harry Amana, a "Reporting the Arts" class taught by Professor Raleigh Mann, a "Professional Problems and Ethics" class taught by Professor Philip Meyer, a "Minorities and Communication" class taught by Amana and an "International Communication" class taught by Professor Robert Stevenson. Sasinska-Klas was in the country at the Polish Academic Information Center at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
  • Amy Schillings, a senior account manager at Long Haymes Carr/Lintas in Winston-Salem, on April 1 visited three advertising classes taught by Professor John Sweeney. Her experience includes work on Hanes, L'Eggs, Winston and Champion Athletics accounts.
  • Ron Sustana, a public-relations consultant who lives in Las Cruces, N.M., spoke Oct. 7 to Professor Jan Yopp's "Public Relations Writing" class and to Professor Carol Pardun's "Principles of Public Relations" class. Sustana has about 35 years of experience in newspapers and public relations and was former public relations director for R.J. Reynolds Industries.
  • Bart Tessler, vice president for news for Westwood One radio network, spoke to Professor Mary Alice Shaver's media management class Oct. 27 and spoke informally with students throughout the day.
  • Dheeraj Vasishta, a Web site builder for agency.com in New York City, spoke about "Working the Web in New York's Silicon Alley" to Professor Debashis Aikat's "Advanced Reporting" and "Electronic Information Sources" classes Oct. 28.
  • Kathleen Vincent, art director for the news art department of the Dallas Morning News, spoke in October to Professor Jay Anthony's "Information Graphics" class and Mike Williams' "Publication Design" class, and did an evening open program for students. She also reviewed student portfolios.
  • Stacy Wall, creative director for Wieden & Kennedy Advertising, spoke to three classes taught by Professor John Sweeney on Feb. 24-25 about his work for the agency. He showed his current work for ESPN promoting college basketball and the Women's National Basketball Association. He also reviewed student portfolios.
  • Ted Wood, whose photographs have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Outside and Smithsonian magazines, talked to members of the Visual Communication Student Group about the life of a freelance photojournalist Nov. 5. Wood drew a crowd of about 30 students, including members of instructor Paul O'Connor's "Newswriting" class. Wood also reviewed student portfolios and was chief photo editor in a sports shootout program.
